Inspiration through fiction is a good starting point. However, it is clear that we must go beyond entertainment to reach the full expression of a journey. Thematic guides are excellent tools for this, as they allow exploring specific niches like gastronomy or architecture, thus refining a destination toward its maximum potential.

Adequate is not enough: the idea that fictional inspiration creates the need for a tourist guide underestimates the true complex machinery behind these essential tools.
Fiction can awaken curiosity, that's true, but it does not guarantee the production of a tool with full utility.
An excellent guide, like a Lonely Planet or a Michelin Guide, is the result of rigorous research and field verifications, not a novel.
To find the best restaurants or hotels, travelers need logistical data and constant updates, not just a good story.

Pushing for the peak: accepting the idea that fictional inspiration "opens a possible way" for the existence of travel guides is an underestimation of their pragmatic function. Fiction can ignite a spark of desire, but it does not dictate the structure or necessity of an optimized information tool. A Michelin guide was not born from a novel, but from a concrete need for road services. The relationship is more of a coexistence where each element responds to a distinct need.

Before rushing, the idea that tourist guides are just a small part of inspiration seems off the mark.
A guide offers protection against setbacks by providing concrete information on real conditions, far from the fantasies of fiction.
How to assess safety or logistics without it? It is the fail-safe of any trip.
For example, a film may inspire visiting a tropical island, but only the guide will reveal if the monsoon season or mosquitoes make the trip unlivable, or if local infrastructure is suitable for seniors.

Talking about tourist guides as a simple "component" of fictional inspiration is a blatant underestimation of their real impact.
Push for the peak: a guide provides the information asymmetry needed to turn a vague desire into an optimal and smooth trip.
Fiction ignites a spark, but it is the guide that allows the full expression of the journey, detailing costs, accommodations, and logistics, essential to avoid getting lost without internet in Seville.
A simple dream does not guarantee the quality of an experience; only the detailed planning offered by a good guide allows reaching the summit of efficiency.

Most of this is noise; the desire to travel and the tools to do so are separate domains. Fictional works can create an urge, but they do not dictate the form or existence of travel guides. A guide responds to logistical and practical needs, such as accommodation or transportation, not to narrative inspiration. For example, a travel guide is not created by a novel but by the need for concrete information for an effective trip.

Their most strong version claims that travel inspiration mainly comes from fiction, with guides being just logistical tools. However, this reading does not always reflect the lived reality for many. A tourist guide is not just a manual for validation after inspiration but can itself trigger the desire. Many, flipping through a Routard or a Lonely Planet, discover unexpected destinations or cultural aspects that create the impulse to travel. For example, I know colleagues who decided to visit Tasmania after seeing photos or descriptions of hikes in a thematic guide, long before a film pushed them there. The rigid distinction between "initial impulse" and "validation" is often too simplistic, as inspiration can quite naturally arise from reading a guide.
