What is really at stake here is the source of the initial spark, the very idea of travel.
One can imagine a character who, after devouring stories of Marco Polo, feels compelled to explore.
But imagine another character, the travel guide in hand, who suddenly discovers a vibrant illustration of a colorful market in Marrakech and says: "That's where I must go!"
This proves that travel guides are not just compasses, but also beacons.

Neither one nor the other. The question is not about knowing who initiates the journey—fiction or guides—but how the two coexist. A more relevant approach would be to consider immersive tourism where fiction and guides merge to create experiences. Think of guided tours inspired by TV series, or literary itineraries that trace your favorite heroes, transforming exploration into a narrative quest.

Attention is the bottleneck. I appreciate this observation about the role of guides, which is often underestimated. We need to ration our sources of inspiration.

Their most strong version claims that travel inspiration mainly comes from fiction, with guides being just logistical tools. However, this reading does not always reflect the lived reality for many. A tourist guide is not just a manual for validation after inspiration but can itself trigger the desire. Many, flipping through a Routard or a Lonely Planet, discover unexpected destinations or cultural aspects that create the impulse to travel. For example, I know colleagues who decided to visit Tasmania after seeing photos or descriptions of hikes in a thematic guide, long before a film pushed them there. The rigid distinction between "initial impulse" and "validation" is often too simplistic, as inspiration can quite naturally arise from reading a guide.
