It's a race to the advantage, and relying solely on fiction inspiration to choose a destination is to be lapped by reality.
The idea that travel guides are just a component of travel inspiration via fiction does not grasp their role as leaders on the ground.
Fiction can spark a spark, but it is the guide who provides the detailed game plan, budgets, and realistic itineraries.
For my family, it is the guide who allowed us to realize our trip to Gaspésie, by listing affordable accommodations and free activities, not a novel.

It's a race for advantage to claim that fiction truly dictates our travel choices before practical guides.
To win vacation planning, travel guides offer an immediate advantage that fiction cannot provide.
A guide will tell you where to find good poutine in Montreal or how to avoid lines at Château Frontenac, which no novel does.

Let's forget the false opposition between fictional inspiration and travel guides; the real question is access to reliable and up-to-date information.
Films can give a desire, yes, but a printed guide is often outdated before even reaching the bookstore, much like a diagnosis based on a Google search.
What we need is a collaborative travel platform where people's experiences enrich others' trips in real time, avoiding bad surprises like forgotten vaccination reminders.
Imagine a registry where each traveler contributes verified feedback on local conditions and pitfalls to avoid; a kind of community health record for your holidays.
Such a system would be much more effective for disaster prevention and discovering authentic destinations than any static source.

Honestly, does the actual cash flow of your holidays change just because a film inspired you?
Strip the hype: travel guides are not just an appendix of fiction, they are often the practical basis that makes a trip possible.
Fiction can certainly give an idea, but it is the guide that provides the concrete information on costs, transportation, or accommodations.
How many people buy a guide to Paris because they saw Amélie Poulain, without ever having thought of going there before?
It is the toolbox that turns inspiration into a feasible plan, not just a glossy addition.

It is true that travel guides can perfectly be catalysts, and not just simple tools. But caution is necessary, as their value decreases significantly in the absence of local mapping or regular updates, which is often the case in the most remote regions. Before fully relying on a guide for inspiration, one must ensure its relevance and currentness on the ground, especially if internet connectivity is anticipated to be lacking.

Simply put: flight search platforms do not 'delimit' visa requirements. They only display existing information, defined by governments. The Japanese passport is your identity document, but it is not Google Flights that decides if you need a visa for America. International travel rules are established by nations, not by a user interface.

Honestly, this idea that fiction is the main spark for traveling, and guides just an extra, is pure media hype. We're sold dreams, but what changes concretely tomorrow for our vacations?
The reality is that travel guides are often the starting point, not the end, because they show concrete destinations with photos.
No one has ever said, “Well, after reading this fiction novel, I know exactly where to eat and sleep in Amsterdam tomorrow,” but a good guide gives you the key.
I've seen people decide to go to the Canary Islands just by browsing a guide showing hikes and beaches before even thinking about a film.

Let's first reconstruct the strongest argument of this view: it is true that fiction can initiate a fascination for a destination, and that travel guides then become practical tools to realize this desire, like planning a trip inspired by a novel about Patagonia.
However, reducing guides to a simple "component" of inspiration born from fiction neglects their ability to generate autonomous and direct inspiration.
A guide can spark the desire to travel through its concrete descriptions and images, long before a work of fiction enriches this idea.
For example, a friend decided to visit Galicia after flipping through a Routard that detailed coastal routes and local gastronomy, without any story pushing him there.

Adequate is not enough; the idea that tourist guides are just a subordinate component of fictional inspiration is a too limited classification.
The highest expression of travel inspiration often comes from the guides themselves, offering a comprehensive roadmap beyond a simple idea.
A guide can create the desire to travel and turn a vague fantasy into an optimized and achievable project.
For example, a guide specialized in the Alsace wine routes or Patagonia hikes does not just inform; it details the experience and motivates action.
