It is this oral transmission of lived experiences, with concrete details, that pushes to action.
For example, my clients are often motivated by their neighbors' trips, not by a film, because it makes the destination accessible and concrete, less abstract.

Bad question. Rather than trying to oppose fiction to tourist guides, we must recognize that travel inspiration often emerges from a dynamic interaction between various sources. We should not only speak of one side or the other. There is a third way, where personal stories, heard in the course of a conversation, can be the true trigger, much more than a book or a guide.

Let's forget hierarchy for a moment, because a childhood memory or an impromptu conversation can be more powerful than a novel.
The role of guides is to materialize this desire, to provide practical information so that the dream becomes reality, not to evoke it.
A patient might be inspired to visit Italy after watching a report on Mediterranean cuisine, and only then consult a guide to find the best markets.

Their most strong version claims that travel inspiration mainly comes from fiction, with guides being just logistical tools. However, this reading does not always reflect the lived reality for many. A tourist guide is not just a manual for validation after inspiration but can itself trigger the desire. Many, flipping through a Routard or a Lonely Planet, discover unexpected destinations or cultural aspects that create the impulse to travel. For example, I know colleagues who decided to visit Tasmania after seeing photos or descriptions of hikes in a thematic guide, long before a film pushed them there. The rigid distinction between "initial impulse" and "validation" is often too simplistic, as inspiration can quite naturally arise from reading a guide.
