What everyone repeats, no one has verified: the idea that tourist guides are only a minor component of travel inspiration is a lazy simplification.
The dogma of fiction as the sole source of inspiration ignores the practical reality where a guide can be the first spark.
How many of my students have been fascinated by a hiking guide on the Swiss Alps, discovering routes that no film could have shown them?
The order of things is not fixed: sometimes, inspiration arises from reading a guide, revealing a place long before a work of fiction confirms it.

Isn't it an oversimplification to reduce the influence to the rainy season when booking tickets?
We must categorize factors properly, because the influence of weather is conditional, not directly causal.
There is the category of unavoidable constraints (professional appointments, school holidays) where weather is secondary.
Then, there is the category of cost optimization, where price dominates, regardless of sunshine.
A business traveler going to Singapore will care more about their meetings and ticket cost than humidity.

Their most strong version claims that travel inspiration mainly comes from fiction, with guides being just logistical tools. However, this reading does not always reflect the lived reality for many. A tourist guide is not just a manual for validation after inspiration but can itself trigger the desire. Many, flipping through a Routard or a Lonely Planet, discover unexpected destinations or cultural aspects that create the impulse to travel. For example, I know colleagues who decided to visit Tasmania after seeing photos or descriptions of hikes in a thematic guide, long before a film pushed them there. The rigid distinction between "initial impulse" and "validation" is often too simplistic, as inspiration can quite naturally arise from reading a guide.
