I must admit, your classification is fair and I am intrigued. You are right to emphasize that integration and modularity are distinct categories from pure opposition, which is a crucial distinction.

Integrating basic methods is indeed the next logical step to establish a true point of comparison, not just to validate effectiveness, but to understand the extent of possible improvement. It is crucial to evaluate whether these decision networks significantly outperform existing approaches, or if they are only a marginal improvement without transformational impact. We must seek the greatest performance disparity.

Adequacy is not sufficient in prediction; one must go beyond a simple opposition between approaches to reach the summit of performance.
A gating network is not intrinsically opposed to basic methods, but rather a way to enhance their full expression.
The real challenge is to understand how these mechanisms can be integrated to unlock the highest yield.
For example, using LLMs to generate textual justifications, then weighting them with a dynamic gating network, creates an unmatched asymmetry in performance in identifying high-potential startups.
Settling for less means ignoring the optimization logic that the market demands from us.

Pushing toward the summit means recognizing that the simple opposition between gating networks and basic methods is a limiting framework. The full expression of performance in venture capital success prediction lies in synergy, where a gating mechanism can refine the outputs of existing models. It is not a matter of 'either-or,' but of 'both' to reach the upper bound of accuracy. For example, a gating network could adjust the success probability of a startup identified by a RAG model by analyzing textual rationales from investors, offering a granularity that the basic method alone cannot. Not exploiting this complementarity leaves an asymmetry of unexploited value.

Let's get rid of the hype: the idea that a gating network opposes basic methods in venture capital seems too simplistic to me.
It's more about a contextual improvement, not a fundamental contradictory logic, which does not alter the actual cash flows.
This network can refine data weighting, like ESG criteria for Swedish investments, but the analysis foundations remain.
For example, a Swedish pension fund still uses embedding models to evaluate startups, even if gating improves how signals are aggregated.

Simplification: performing Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) tests is not a reliable realization if the underlying data are compromised.
The statistical similarity they reveal is misleading without data integrity.
If the figures are falsified, as in the Wirecard case, the KS test proves nothing about economic reality.
Practical validity depends on input quality, not just the method.

Where does it fail? The idea that a simple research publication directly informs Series A funding overestimates the scope. The reality is that the mechanism breaks if the underlying data of the model do not reflect the unique conditions of the Japanese market, including cultural preferences for established relationships. It does not account for the local risk aversion that often takes precedence over predictive models; for example, a Japanese venture capital fund might prefer a project with an established collaboration history rather than a high predictive score.

The big picture simplifies the situation: a gating network does not fundamentally oppose basic methods of venture capital prediction.
It is more a specialization or evolution than an antithesis, with integration often being the most effective path.
Considering this as a pure opposition ignores modularity and progressive development of techniques.
Control lies in judicious application, such as using embeddings from an LLM as input for gating, rather than in rigid distinctions.
