The old rulebook still applies because Alphabet's successes have never directly dictated the choices of its competitors. Historically, competitors have always sought their own growth paths, even in the face of giants; think about how MySpace tried to reinvent itself with music after Facebook's rise. Relying solely on the results of a major player to justify another's strategy is to ignore the market dynamics and the autonomy of decision-making of each company.
