What is really at stake here is minimizing risks. Indeed, a conference alone is not a decisive factor for choosing a destination. The most economical way is to first check the visa requirements for your specific nationality before even dreaming of a destination. This can save you costly disappointments and unnecessary research.

The "does this even apply to me" check comes before the story. As a Digital Safety Advisor, I would make this conditional rather than decisive: the mechanism only carries if the surrounding constraints actually permit it.

Forget the binary between fiction and guides as travel triggers; the real trigger is often much more pragmatic.
Neither romanticized inspiration nor travel manuals will dictate departure; it is the window of opportunity and word of mouth that prevail.
An unexpected third way is the influence of close ones who have experienced it and shared the good deals.
For example, many people travel to Croatia not for a film, but because a friend praised the beaches' beauty and an unbeatable flight price.

Neither fiction nor travel guides truly dictate our travel destinations here; it is a matter of practical priorities and real family constraints.
We do not choose a destination just because we saw a film, but because the budget, dates, and children's needs (allergies, activities) impose it first.
Guides or fictional stories become tools to validate or refine a travel idea that has already taken shape, after managing the basic logistics.
For example, even if the film La La Land makes you want to go to Los Angeles, the lack of affordable direct flights for a family of five will rule out this option long before opening a guide.

If I were arguing that travel inspiration mainly comes from fiction, I would emphasize the narrative power of stories that create deep and lasting desires for escape.
However, it is crucial to recognize that this fictional inspiration is often an unmaterialized impulse, lacking practical details necessary to turn the dream into a project.
A travel guide provides verifiable information and the structure to realize this desire, offering itineraries, budgets, and logistical information that form the basis of any decision.
For example, even if a film inspires me to want Japanese culture, it is the guide that will tell me how to travel, where to stay, and what the actual costs are.

Their arguments are solid: of course, a work of fiction can ignite an initial spark and make us dream of distant destinations; it is undeniable that movies or books transport us.
However, limiting tourist guides to a simple logistical tool without internet ignores their power of creating desire upstream.
A guide can present a destination with such practical precision and activity suggestions that it sparks the desire to travel just as much as a story.
For example, a detailed guide on hiking trails in Patagonia, with its maps, difficulty levels, and realistic photos, made me want to go more than any series.
They turn a vague idea into a tangible and appealing project, which fiction alone does not always do.

Let's forget what we have already invested: an online conference is not enough to determine the choice of a travel destination.
This type of resource is useful, but influence is conditional and not decisive, as other practical constraints are much more determinant.
For example, for a student like me, if plane tickets for a proposed destination in a conference are out of budget, or if I do not have the necessary days off, the conference will have had no influence on my final travel decision.
