The failure point is to consider travel guides as a simple sub-part of romantic travel inspiration.
In Japan, meticulous planning is king, and a guide can be the primary source for deciding on a destination, long before fiction plays a role.
For example, a "Michelin Green Guide Japan" or a "Lonely Planet" offers practical details on transportation and local customs that fiction does not address.
The inspiration from a film to visit Kyoto can quickly evaporate in the face of logistical complexities if the guide does not provide clear solutions, making the guide a decisive filter.

Isn't it fascinating to see how impulse can arise from unexpected sources? Totally agree, guides are not just logistical crutches. Moreover, for some, discovering a local recipe or an obscure festival in a guide can be the ultimate trigger, much more than a grand cinematic epic.

Their most strong version claims that travel inspiration mainly comes from fiction, with guides being just logistical tools. However, this reading does not always reflect the lived reality for many. A tourist guide is not just a manual for validation after inspiration but can itself trigger the desire. Many, flipping through a Routard or a Lonely Planet, discover unexpected destinations or cultural aspects that create the impulse to travel. For example, I know colleagues who decided to visit Tasmania after seeing photos or descriptions of hikes in a thematic guide, long before a film pushed them there. The rigid distinction between "initial impulse" and "validation" is often too simplistic, as inspiration can quite naturally arise from reading a guide.
