If I had to argue the opposite point of view, I would say that travel guides are not just a component of inspiration from fiction; they can be the primary and autonomous source of the desire to travel, offering a practical inspiration that precedes or surpasses imagination.
Their strongest version would be that fiction creates a dream, an aspiration, but guides transform this dream into a concrete project.
However, it is entirely possible that the order is reversed or that both operate in parallel, because a guide can, through its detailed descriptions and evocative photographs, inspire a desire for discovery long before a novel or film reinforces it.
Take the case of Belgium: a detailed guide on craft breweries can alone inspire a trip, even without having seen a film set there, simply because of the richness of the information it provides on local experiences.
