If I had to defend the opposing point of view, I would say that the hierarchical distinction between fiction as the main inspiration and travel guides as simple sub-parts is a too rigid classification and does not reflect the complex reality of travel planning. A guide can very well be the initial spark, not just a logistical preparation tool. It is important to remember that a visually stimulating guide, with photos of landscapes or architecture, can create the desire to visit a destination entirely. In Belgium, for example, a detailed hiking guide on the Ardennes can inspire a trip without any novel or film preceding this desire.
