If I were to defend the position that tourist guides are an essential component of travel inspiration through fiction, I would say they turn wonder into a concrete project, providing an indispensable bridge between dream and reality.
However, this hierarchy is not always stable or universal.
Initial inspiration very often comes from an image or atmosphere conveyed by a film or a book, long before turning to a guide.
Guides tend to act more as a confirmation and planning tool once the initial spark has already occurred; they do not create the desire in the same way.
For example, after being transported by a novel to Patagonia, one will consult a guide to know how to get there, not if one wants to go, because the guide is a means, not the inspiring end.
