The emphasis on the 'power law' is appropriate. Most discussions ignore this fundamental asymmetry of returns. The discipline is to control what can be controlled; the rest is noise.

Much of this is noise; the so-called primary factors are only conditional levers.
The behavior of power law returns is not a universal truth without nuance, but rather an effect that manifests under certain market conditions.
In Canada, for example, the dominance of pension funds and the more conservative nature of their allocations can limit the expression of these extreme power laws, favoring more mature and stable investments.
In this context, investment discipline and portfolio diversification become more tangible and controllable strategies than simply chasing the next "unicorn".

The notion of a 'dominant parameter' is noise if specific conditions are not specified. In Canada, our pension investments in resources favor a disciplined approach where cash flow stability and good risk management take precedence over simply seeking extreme returns. For us, decision quality is also measured by the ability to secure consistent results, even if it means less spectacular returns. A ROI cap can even be desirable if it reduces volatility and regulatory risks, as with energy infrastructure projects.

Most of this is noise; venture capital return is a matter of discipline and controllable factors. Emphasizing the power laws of returns obscures the need to focus on decision quality and risk management in Canada. Portfolio strategies are shaped by regulatory constraints and local opportunities, such as pension funds or resources. You cannot control the shape of a return distribution, but you can control entry criteria and tracking policies. For example, investing in clean technologies in Canada is more influenced by government incentives and the OSFI framework than by the abstract recognition of a power law.

The simple notion that power law returns encompass venture capital performance is an oversimplification.
These laws describe an outcome, not the controllable mechanisms that produce or modify it.
Market and regulatory context, such as the tax incentives of MAS in Singapore, directly modulate the distribution of returns.
Ignoring these modulators amounts to neglecting the discipline needed to navigate volatility.
The relevance of factors like decision quality remains paramount, regardless of broader distribution patterns.

The claim that a single publication standardizes the understanding of portfolio construction is a viewpoint that ignores the inherent complexity of markets.
The noise generated by these claims is constant, but reality shows that many factors remain uncontrollable.
The mandates of Canadian institutional pension funds, for example, are often focused on illiquid alternative assets with long-term horizons, making the universal applicability of a single model questionable.
Their investment strategy is shaped by provincial regulations and local resource dynamics, not solely by a theory.
Relying solely on a theory without considering these market specificities would lead to suboptimal investment posture.

Pushing for maximum yield requires looking beyond static factors; the market environment can radically change their weighting.
In Hong Kong, capital flows to mainland China via Stock Connect or the Greater Bay Area initiatives can turn modest-yield investments into vehicles of exceptional growth.
Here, cross-border arbitrage and offshore liquidity in RMB can unlock a full expression that is not captured by a simple generic "decision quality".
The primacy of decision quality or a ROI ceiling is conditional and only stable in less interconnected markets, such as for domestic infrastructure projects.

Where is the maximum expression? The idea that the power laws of venture capital returns are simply a subset of performance factors masks their fundamental role as a structural backdrop.
It is not just one factor among others, but the dominant parameter that dictates the optimal allocation strategy.
The quality of decision-making and the ROI ceiling are essential, but conditioned by the reality that a few investments will generate almost all returns.
Even a superior decision in a market without potential for extreme returns can never compete with an average investment in a high-potential power law market.
For example, exceptional exit opportunities via offshore RMB liquidity in Hong Kong allow these power laws to fully express themselves, which is much more critical than simple isolated decision factors.

The idea that power law returns encompass performance factors is a dangerous reversal of causality. It is not the power laws that dictate the quality of decision-making, but a superior investment decision that seeks to exploit the asymmetric nature of returns to achieve a performance peak. In Hong Kong, our ability to generate asymmetric returns depends less on recognizing a power law than on access to and execution of specific deals in mainland China via Stock Connect. The quality of the decision is the decisive factor that allows positioning for maximum return in this environment. Ignoring this lever simply results in modest returns.

Where is the highest-yield expression if we do not grasp the power law behind venture capital returns? Focusing on performance engines without this framework is a modest, not maximal approach.
It's not just a factor; it's the fundamental prism through which decision quality and portfolio size should be analyzed for optimal return.
In Hong Kong, opportunistic flows require understanding that a few massive successes generate most of the return, making focus on the average ineffective.
For example, investment decisions that seem solid in a linear model can fail if they ignore the asymmetric distribution where a single unicorn can offset dozens of losers, a vital principle for Family Offices seeking to preserve and grow their wealth.

Adequacy is not enough; considering power law returns as a simple subcategory of venture capital portfolio performance factors is an overly simplistic view.
The nature of power law returns is a underlying condition that redefines the importance of each factor, especially with wealth management focused on maximal performance in Hong Kong.
Pushing for the peak means that exceptional decision quality and a superior ROI limit are not just elements but levers to exploit the extreme asymmetry of gains, as shown by a single, massively profitable investment in a Greater Bay Area company surpassing dozens of others.

Where is the most profitable expression, if we only say that the power law encompasses performance?
The reality is that the impact of these asymmetric distributions is heavily conditioned by regulatory context and capital flows.
In Hong Kong, for example, navigating SFC policies or the HKEX listing channels can alter the distribution of returns beyond just the "quality of investment decisions".
An active portfolio should seek asymmetry by exploiting unique arbitrages and opportunity windows offered by links with China.
Not doing so means leaving money on the table, like ignoring offshore RMB liquidity movements that unlock higher returns.
